This isn't all done yet, but you can apply anyway.

The year is 1985. The Cold War is nearing its climax as the world's major superpowers continue to push their conflict near the point of nuclear armageddon. In the west, the United States of America continues to strengthen its military, its NATO allies, and its influence in the Third World. In the east, the Soviet Union continues to amass an ever larger military force while dealing with incredible turmoil both internally, and among their Eastern Bloc allies. The war in Afghanistan has no end in sight.

In Europe, the new European Union begins to emerge as a collective power, while other countries in Europe struggle to find a place in global affairs. Some still cling to precarious neutrality.

Africa is a hotbed of international activity as the world's major powers try to plant the seeds of geopolitical influence. Many countries, however, have been both freed from their colonial masters and are building their own national identities. South Africa still struggles under apartheid.

South America, like Africa, is of great interest to the world's major powers. Some countries remain politically stable, like Brazil, while others suffer through endless coups and revolutions, switching allegiances and leaders almost constantly.

The Middle East enjoys a newfound political power through their domination of crude oil. While the region is divided in terms of political and religious stances, a vast number of these countries are still united by their Muslim identity. Israel, on the other hand, is still in a precarious position.

Asia finds itself under the influence of two rising powers, India and China. India's rapidly growing population as well as their increasing cultural and economic power secure it a place of power in the near future, while China's new economic policies and already gigantic population already grant it immense power on an international scale.

The world is in a state of turmoil, in preparation for geopolitical shifts that could have massive ramifications for the human race. The actions of leaders and allegiances of nations will permanently shape the advancement of humanity, the face of first, second, and third world, and determine whether humanity is wiped off the face of the planet by thermonuclear war.

Gameplay

In Hegemony, players take control of a country and lead it into the 21st century how they see fit. While it is important to stay true to the time and place, it is also just as important to have fun and do whatever you want to mess up history.

The progression of history takes place at 2 weeks per page.

Rules

The standard rules of a forum RP apply. No metagaming, powergaming, et cetera.

In this case, not powergaming takes on a very specific character, however. It's necessary for one to keep in mind their country's economic and political strength before taking any action, and things could easily come across as powergaming even if that was not your intent. Poland, for instance, might have trouble developing its own space program without significant effort, and sacrificing other parts of their government and economy, not to mention the extra time it would take to build the infrastructure, before even speaking of acquiring rocket parts or hiring astronauts!

Because the game takes place on a fairly specific timescale, try to stick with the general progression of time, unless otherwise permitted.

Making sudden, dramatic changes to your country is not recommended, as it could not only come across as powergaming, but it could also tremendously affect your country's stability and political strength.

Harvey is still lazy and will finish this later.

Application:

Country name.
Leader's name.

Provide a brief description of your country's recent history (last year will do) and current state of affairs.

Choose a leader (preferably fictional) and describe them.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
Pyotr Demichev, General Secretary of the CPSU
Hegemony 1985 - OOC 200px-Coat_of_arms_of_the_Soviet_Union.svg

The Soviet Union has been in a period of decline since the 1970's, under Leonid Brezhnev. This period of economic stagnation continued under Yuri Andropov and continues now under Konstantin Chernenko. Chernenko himself has been in poor health for months, and has been confined to his hospital bed, running the country by way of letters to the Politburo. All the while, conditions within the USSR and with foreign relations have been deteriorating. The Soviet Union is starting to fall behind statistically, and the country is the closest it's ever been to all-out war. The Soviet Union is nearing the beginning of the end, and is in dire need of change.

As Chernenko appears close to his end, the upper levels of the Communist Party are actively searching out a new leader to bring the Soviet Union through the coming turmoil. Many reformists have sought the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev, a young member of the Politburo who holds many liberal and radical ideals. More conservative members are in support of Grigory Romanov, a former soldier. Perhaps most surprisingly, however, is support for the conservative former culture minister, Pyotr Demichev. Demichev spent his years in the culture ministry advancing the ideals of the Russian Revolution, and making his opposition to dissenters clear. His cooperative nature, shown through his politburo years, however, has made him an observed candidate for leadership, with some support from both hardliners and reformers.
